Community Involvement

Being involved in and supporting the communities in which we operate is an integral part of the culture of Tartan Industrial Contracting Ltd. The underlying principle of our Community Development and Aboriginal Engagement programs is our sincere desire to maintain a successful and enduring relationship with area residents and organizations. Some information on our policies and programs, as well as examples of our ongoing initiatives are presented below.

Community Engagement Policy Statement
Tartan Canada Corporation and its affiliated companies promote opportunities for local residents, including Aboriginal First Nations, through employment, community and school involvement, and subcontractor business opportunities, while adhering to the highest standards of safety, quality, and service to our customers.

Community Engagement Initiatives
Our long history in Redwater, Alberta, where we have operated since 1953, has provided Tartan with many opportunities for community leadership and involvement. We have participated in a variety of projects in Redwater, including donations and volunteer support to the community and the local school system. One example of a recent initiative was our sponsorship of the grand opening of the Redwater Cultural Centre in June of this year (see photo and description below).

Redwater Cultural Centre Sponsorship

Tartan was a Silver Sponsor of the grand opening of the Redwater Cultural Centre, which took place on June 25th of this year. The new state-of-the-art facility addresses a previously unfilled need in the community, providing an ideal venue for the performing arts, tradeshows, conferences, exhibits, and many other special events. A Redwater municipal spokesperson said that the Cultural Centre will provide significant long-term benefits for local residents as well as area businesses.

Another major focus for community involvement is in Conklin, AB, where we established a new operations center in February 2008. Because all Conklin and area residents are impacted by oil and gas activity in the vicinity, Tartan has been working closely with regional plant and project owners to ensure that community members receive the full benefit from area-specific consultation, development and employment programs.

A key component of Tartan's Community Development Program is a strong emphasis on local hiring. As our area operations continue to grow, we foresee that our local workforce will expand significantly, both in the trades as well as management and administration.

In addition to providing local employment and business opportunities, Tartan makes a significant contribution to the communities in which it operates, either in cash or services in kind. Examples of some our recent activities, include:
  • Tartan Canada Scholarship Program

  • A variety other events, including family carnivals, candlelight vigils, talent shows, and community potluck dinners.

Conklin CAPP Energy in Action Event Sponsorship

On May 10th of this year, Tartan donated services and volunteer time for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) "Energy in Action" event in Conklin, Alberta. The project focused on the construction of an outdoor classroom setting for the Conklin Community School. Since 2004, more than 2,000 volunteers from 59 companies have participated in Energy in Action events in 55 communities and 75 schools across Canada.
